One way to look at cultural diversity is that it is based on the environment. Looking back in time, biodiversity existed for millions of years before people did. With the inhabitant of people, the cultures that were formed were based on their surroundings. The environment, animals and people are able to coexist and flourish with each side contributing known as the circle of life. When one side starts to drastically change it effects everything in the area and also the atmosphere for hundreds of miles.
To further explain this theory, we can look at the Fertile Crescent that we learned about in the first assignment. The Fertile Crescent was once a large piece of land that ancient settlement had occupied around 8000-7000 BC. It was known as the Fertile Crescent because of its rich soil and biodiversity of plants and animals. When early settlers had become more knowledgeable and learned how to grow their own crops (wheat), they began building a community. With the overpopulation, excessive use of resources and not contributing back to the environment, eventually led to the arid, dry and uninhabitable land it is today. What the settlers saw as their survival ultimately ended with the destruction of the land.
Preserving biodiversity and cultural diversity could be seen as a tricky and controversial issue that needs to involve the government, but that is not the case. In some countries, involving the government might be the right way to go, but in many other countries it would be the end of culture and biodiversity. For example, in Australia, the government involvement is actually beneficial because the country as a whole, really cares about their diversity and history and do not want to lose any more than they already have. On the bad side, some of the governments in Africa would be detrimental to the biological and culture diversity because of the corruption and need to control all aspects of the people and environment.
In conclusion, I really think that preservation really comes down to the people. Understanding the history and knowledge that different cultures and ecosystems provide are for the most part beneficial for everyone. The resources all throughout the world are being used up and not replenished. It has already been proven what happens when the land is overused and without many of the cultures and ecosystems, humans would be the ones to become extinct.
